Many so-called Christian psychologists have said that the mind is the brain. As a result, they believe that the emotions can be manipulated by psychotrophic drugs. They have taken a cue from the secular humanists’ theory of behaviorism, which teaches that there is no spirit. The “Christian” psychologists do not deny the existence of the spirit but equate the spiritual mind with the physical brain.
The book of Romans makes clear that the mind is spiritual not physical as psychologists claim. Using the scripture’s built-in dictionary, it is easy to find out whether the mind is spiritual or physical.
21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
Here Paul states that he delights “in the law of God after the inward man” with his mind. He delighted in God’s law inwardly, the law in his members warred against the law of his mind, with the mind he serves the law of God. The mind is therefore in the inward man.
Paul explains the difference between the outward and inward man in Romans 2:28-29.
28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: 29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
The mind and the heart are thusly both in the spirit.
The psychologizers want Christians to believe that the church is to handle spiritual issues and not mental. However, I have shown that the mind is spiritual. We are to have our inward man renewed by the washing of the water of the word of God through Christ’s Holy Ghost.
38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner. 39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. 40 Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?
It is in the inward man where all evil resides and it is the inward man that needs to be renewed. Only God can renew our spirits.
2 Corinthians 4:6-16
6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. 8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. 11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. 12 So then death worketh in us, but life in you. 13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak; 14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you. 15 For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. 16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
